Channel blocking: Canal+ takes TF1 to court for abuse of dominant position

Obviously, the dispute between TF1 and Canal+ concerning the broadcasting of the group’s free channels will be settled in court. Indeed, while TF1 attacked the encrypted channel on September 7, 2022, Canal+ decided to take the channel to court in turn, for abuse of a dominant position.

Remember, on September 2, 2022, Canal+ announces to everyone’s surprise the cessation of broadcasting of the free channels of the TF1 group. Without warning, subscribers to the encrypted channel therefore find themselves deprived of TF1, TMC, TFX, TF1 Series Films or even LCI.

The cause ? Canal+ denounces the exaggerated commercial demands of TF1which would have demanded the payment of a “very substantial remuneration for its free DTT channels”. Moreover, Canal+ accuses TF1 of wanting to charge ever more for the broadcasting of free channels.

According to Maxime Saada, chairman of the executive board of the Canal+ group, we are talking here about a increase of around 50%. Totally fanciful figures, if we are to believe the statements of Didier Cassas, general secretary of the TF1 group, invited to the morning of FranceInfo this September 5, 2022.

Canal + and TF1 will face each other in court

Who is telling the truth? Who says wrong? These questions will obviously find answers in the courts. Indeed, on September 7, TF1 filed a complaint against Canal+, in the hope of obtaining the reinstatement of its channels on TNT Sat. This satellite service allows the 1.8 million French people residing in the white zone to receive hertzian channels.

It must be said that it has been nearly a week since Canal subscribers are in front of a black screen when they go to the channels of the TF1 group channels. This constitutes a significant shortfall for TF1, since MyCanal subscribers still represent between 12 and 15% of his audience. “The truth is the reverse. We have very significant audience impacts, which create harm for us that we will not let pass”. assured Didier Cass at the microphone of FranceInfo.

Unsurprisingly, the response from Canal+ was not long in coming. As revealed by our colleagues from Le Parisien, the group has just filed a summons before the Nanterre commercial court for abuse of a dominant position against the TF1 group.
