Chaos after conversion – it’s getting really tight for two trucks on the main road

Total chaos in Scharnstein after the reconstruction of the B 120, Scharnsteiner Straße. Cars drive onto the newly constructed cycle path because they confuse it with the main road. Trucks have a hard time meeting each other on the 6.5 meter wide road through town.

The construction site in the center of Scharnstein has been kicking up dust for a year and a half. First, the residents complained about the “snail’s pace” of the construction work, then the business owners complained about the severe loss of sales due to the closure of the through town. Now there is a third big excitement, which will be felt shortly before the end of the work scheduled for December 15th. “Instead of 22 parking spaces along the B 120, there are only eleven available. And they have completely failed,” complains Nikolaus Wührer from the citizens’ initiative Pro Scharnstein. Parking bays cause problems for drivers. Most bays would actually be intended for two cars. Most of the time there is only one car parked. If you want to use the second parking space, you have to drive over high curbs in forward gear or block traffic on the main road in reverse gear. During the “Krone” on-site inspection, a delivery truck even stopped in front of the parking bay in the intersection area. “There used to be seven parking spaces in front of my tobacconist’s shop, but now there’s one bay, so de facto one parking space,” complains Petra Steinhauser about a 30% loss in sales. Because of the parking problems, florist Edith Strasser also faces an uncertain future. “I don’t know how much longer it will last. When my parents gave the land in front of the shop to the community in 1995, they expressly stated that the parking spaces had to be retained.” Unmarked cycle path causes confusion. The now significantly narrower lane of the B…120 is also causing problems: “For two trucks next to each other “Not enough space,” says Wührer. The state highway administration denies this. At 6.5 meters, the road would meet all the criteria; a road on Attersee would only be six meters. As part of citizen participation, the desire for traffic calming measures was expressed, including narrower lanes. The new, not yet signposted cycle path is also misleading. Many drivers confuse it with a road. After a few meters they notice the error and put the car in reverse. According to the state highway administration, a sign will be installed today, Friday. A Ragdweg problem remains: pedal riders complain that they have to cross the main road while driving through the town.
