Just in time for the start of the working week, the climate activists of the last generation are once again causing chaos on Vienna’s streets. Several traffic junctions were paralyzed on Monday morning. Shortly before 8 a.m., the activists started the mega-protest: the streets in the area of Schwarzenbergplatz and Linke Wienzeile were blocked. The activists are also likely to have targeted the bridges in the federal capital this time.
It is the third and probably last week of the planned actions in Vienna. On May 2nd, the “Störwelle” started in the Austrian capital and caused extensive unrest. The climate stickers are heating up the minds of the population more and more. Several streets blocked on Monday, the protesters mainly caused chaos in the Schwarzenbergplatz area. Some activists have already glued themselves to the road there and are blocking traffic. The ÖAMTC reported delays on several bridges: The traffic on the Floridsdorfer bridge in the direction of the city was paralyzed by the climate stickers. The Nordbrücke, the Reichsbrücke and the Praterbrücke are also affected by the actions. The Vienna police are currently trying to dissolve all meetings. Another assembly is on the Linke Wienzeile at the level of the Getreidemarkt. The Last Generation is an alliance of climate activists in Austria and Germany. The protesters aim to use civil disobedience to force measures by the German and Austrian federal governments against the climate crisis.Radical forms of protestThe participants use radical forms of protest and have to take severe criticism for this. Just recently, an ambulance was held up in traffic in Vienna because activists had glued themselves to the street.
