A movie script idea that could be a big hit, but not enough time or resources to write it? The solution: Dramatron, the AI co-writing tool created by DeepMind.

After the AI to write student essays, here is the AI to generate film and theater scripts. This is Dramatron, a co-writing tool designed by DeepMind to help human writers in their ideation and screenwriting process.

What is Dramatron concretely?

Concretely, Dramatron is a co-writing tool that can generate character descriptions, plot points, location descriptions or dialogues. The tool relies on existing and pre-trained language models to generate long and coherent text.

The idea is that human writers then come to compile, modify and rewrite what is offered by Dramatron into a more formal and proper script.

Dramatron would therefore be used mostly for world building, exploring new approaches in terms of changing elements and characters, or even for generating creative ideas.

Generating a whole script, really?

You should know that Dramatron was not designed as a standalone writing tool. The DeepMind team engaged 15 writers and screenwriters in two-hour study sessions to evaluate Dramatron, co-writing scripts with the tool. Result: a playwright managed to stage four scripts, but heavily edited and rewritten.

These professionals said they would not use the tool to create a complete part. In other words, the tool was designed to complement human activity.

The tool does indeed have some limitations. First, the writers discovered that the ideas suggested by the AI could be stereotyped. Then the AI has a top-down, hierarchical story generation structure, which is not the writing process for all writers. By the way, to use Dramatron, you need an OpenAI API key, and to reduce the risk of offensive text, a Perspective API key.
