A break-in in the posh suburb of Athens shocked the whole of Greece: three masked men had violently entered a villa and proceeded there with unbelievable brutality.
The perpetrators gag the 32-year-old helicopter pilot Charalambos A. and tie him to a chair with a rope. His wife, Caroline A., who was only 20 years old, was tortured and killed in front of their 11-month-old daughter. Even the family dog did not survive the break-in.
At least that was the version that Charalambos A. described to the police the morning after. But now the case is taking an incredible turn. Because A. has now confessed to having invented the horror break-in to cover up his own bloody act. After 37 days of playing the grieving widower in front of the world.
Movement tracker exposed the perpetrator
Apparently, in the course of the investigation, the noose had tightened more and more for the Greek. His wife’s fitness tracker was the main fatality for him.
As the “Daily Mail” writes, the Greek police were able to evaluate the data recorded on the tracker. And the information about the time of Caroline A.’s death did not match the statements of her husband at all. Movement recordings on A.’s cell phone also refuted the original descriptions. So the noose tightened around the 32-year-old, who soon became a suspect.
“He started talking”
So now followed Charalambos A.’s confession. “Before we could even confront him with the latest investigative findings, he started talking,” says a Greek police officer about the turn.
It is still unclear whether A. acted alone or had help from accomplices. A. told the police that the act was preceded by a dispute between himself and Caroline A. “She threw the child in the cot and told me to leave the house.” Then he went nuts and suffocated his wife with a pillow. (cat)
