Charente Maritime. “It was a bit of a panic”: while fishing with a magnet, a family pulls up a shell

Don’t touch anything

Warned, Gaby Touzinaud, the mayor of the town, and Marc Sohas, his first deputy, quickly go to the scene to secure them. “We put up security barriers and the instructions were clear: above all, nothing should be touched”, explains the elected official, reached by telephone. The Saint-Porchaire gendarmerie secured the site. Photos of the machine were taken and then sent to the deminers of La Rochelle in order to assess the dangerousness. “They will come this Tuesday morning, continues Gaby Touzinaud. They want to transport the shell to La Rochelle to destroy it in a dedicated site. »

Beyond the emotion and the adrenaline, Loicia Hervé would like to know if she will be able to recover her magnet, recently acquired for the tidy sum of 300 euros. “We had it for a month,” she says. It has a power of 1400 kg. The deminers apparently chose to blow it up with the shell… We’ll see if we can’t be compensated. »

The site was immediately secured, pending the deminers who will be on site this Tuesday, February 1.

Deminers are increasingly faced with this kind of discovery and it is not to help them. “Our team is sufficient to respond to requests, but on condition that we are not mobilized unnecessarily for this kind of intervention”, explained Claude Clarès, the director of the La Rochelle demining center, to “Sud Ouest” in August 2019. His team operates in an area of eight departments. They will also be in Royan this Friday, February 4 to deal with a 250-kilogram bomb discovered on a construction site.
