Trump’s motorcade reached the prison building in the state capital of Georgia on Thursday evening (local time), as seen on television pictures. There, the Republican presidential candidate had to endure the formal procedure that follows an indictment.
The procedure includes recording his personal details. Several US media reported, citing the responsible sheriff, that a police photo of Trump had also been taken. There was initially no official confirmation of this. Such a photo would be a first in the USA: never before has a so-called “mugshot” been taken by a former US President.
Trump has already left court
After less than half an hour, Trump’s motorcade left the prison grounds again. The Republican was expected to leave town immediately after the appointment.
The fact that the Republican had to appear in prison instead of in court for the procedure, unlike previous charges, has a new quality, at least from the outside perspective. Trump was charged in Atlanta with 18 other suspects over his attempts to influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.
