Charlene of Monaco leaving the Rock on the sly: the princess’s secret getaway revealed?

A departure alone and discreetly. According to information from Gala, Princess Charlene of Monaco would have taken the direction of Rome this Tuesday, July 19, where she could meet Pope Francis. A secret trip that would take place without her husband, Prince Albert II, or her two children.

An ultra-secret trip. Our Gala colleagues reveal that Charlene of Monaco would have gone to Rome this Tuesday, July 19. The princess would thus have taken the direction of the Italian capital, without her husband, Prince Albert II, and without her two children, Jacques and Gabriella. Gala also indicates that Charlène of Monaco could meet Pope Franciswithout the presence of an official photographer.

And it wouldn’t be the first time the former South African swimmer has met the pope. In January 2016, she had already had the honor of meeting him, during an official visit with Prince Albert II. For the occasion, Charlene of Monaco was dressed in a white set, and not black, as required by protocol. An outfit authorized under the “white privilege” (in Italian, “privilegio del bianco”) – a prerogative reserved for only a few Catholic queens, princesses and duchesses, which authorizes them during audiences with the pope, to wear white vestments and mantillas, usually reserved for the pontiff.

Charlene of Monaco converted since 2011

During this meeting, Charlene of Monaco could not hide her emotion when bowing to the Holy Father. An unfeigned devotion, which had touched the representative of the Church. The latter had also sent a message to Monaco for the baptism of the princely twins, Jacques and Gabriella.

Born a Protestant, Charlene of Monaco converted to Catholicism in 2011, two months before her marriage to Albert II of Monaco. Before meeting Pope Francis, the princess had visited her predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, in January 2013. A visit during which Prince Albert II had presented his wife to the sovereign pontiff. And a few months later, the couple was also present to attend the inaugural mass of Pope Francis.
