A new exhibition in the “King’s Gallery” at Buckingham Palace shows previously unpublished photos of the royal family, including more private moments of the royals. Below is a photo from 1943 of King George VI. (1895-1952) sits at a desk in the Royal Lodge on the grounds of Windsor Castle, surrounded by his family. George was on the throne from 1936 to 1952 and is the father of Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) and Princess Margaret (1930-2002), whom he had with his wife, Queen Mum (1900-2002).

The inconspicuous photo of the monarch sitting at his desk, framed by the three women, was “intended to show the stability and unity of the royal family in a time of war,” reports “bbc.com” about the recording. The Royal Collection Trust also shows the picture on Instagram.

The exhibition at Buckingham Palace, which opens today, May 17, brings together one of the largest collections of royal images and tells the story of the family over the last 100 years, according to the report. Also shown is a photo with the young Princess Anne (73) and King Charles (75), photographed by Lord Snowdon (1930-2017) as part of a series for the then prince’s eighth birthday.

Four royal mothers with their babies

Another picture shown is from 1964. It shows four royal mothers who gave birth two months apart: the late Queen, Princess Margaret, the Duchess of Kent (91) and Princess Alexandra (87 ) were photographed with their newborns. According to the report, the picture was taken as a gift for the doctor who delivered the children and has never been shown publicly.

In the present, photographer Hugo Burnand (60) has documented royal events – including the king’s coronation last May and the wedding of Prince William (41) and Princess Kate (42) in 2011. William is sitting in one of the photos in the exhibition and Kate after their wedding in the throne room of Buckingham Palace, surrounded by the girls and boys who were involved in the ceremony.

In addition to official photos of the royal family, some other photographs by Burnand will also be on display, such as his photo of the king with Queen Camilla (76), sitting together on a bench in the garden of Clarence House. It is one of the couple’s most personal pictures.
