Charlie Hebdo scandalizes with its front page on Meghan Markle

The last one of Charlie Hebdo is controversial in England. We see Elizabeth II suffocating Meghan Markle as was George Floyd, murdered by a police officer last year.

In England, the last cover of Charlie hebdo sparked a scandal. After the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's interview with Oprah, where they denounced in particular the racism of which the former actress was a victim, the satirical newspaper seized on the case. His front page, published on March 13 on Twitter, was drawn by the cartoonist June, and we see Elizabeth II kneeling on the neck of Meghan Markle, who answers "Because I couldn't breathe anymore" under questioning on the reasons for his departure from the royal family.

This caricature shared by Charlie hebdo refers to the death of George Floyd last year in Minneapolis. This African American died of suffocation by a policeman who knelt on his neck. In startling videos of the scene, this father could be heard trying to say: "I can not breath anymore". His death had led to numerous protests against police violence and racism, in the United States and around the world.

This drawing deeply shocked public opinion, as reported The Guardian. Dr Halima Begum, chief executive of the UK racial equality think tank Runnymede Trust, reacted on Twitter. "Charlie Hebdo is bad on every level. The queen like George Floyd's assassin crushing Meghan's neck? Meghan so she can't breathe? It doesn't push the limits, doesn't make anyone laugh, doesn't does not question racism. It demeans problems and offends, at all levels ", she is indignant. Let us recall that, after the famous interview, the feelings of the Duchess of Sussex on racism were extremely devalued, in particular by the British newspapers.

It is also on Twitter that the association Black and Asian Lawyers For Justice criticized this cartoon. "French racism at its peak. This is white supremacist bullshit. […] Using George Floyd's trauma for profit. Outrageous, disgusting and fascist racism", she denounces. March 10, Charlie hebdo posted on Twitter another image that could have made the front page. We see the Queen, Prince Philipp behind her, said: "Meghan Markle, we are going to screw her race". This drawing seems to have escaped criticism, but it is nonetheless disgusting.
