Charts Japan: Zelda, a launch worthy of the greatest

Here it is, the favorite for the biggest-selling title of the year, and not just in Japan. As announced by Nintendo, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has exceeded 10 million copies sold worldwide in the space of three days, an extravagant performance which is of course also reflected in the Japanese charts… even if the archipelago is the only market in which the latest Zelda does not come close to Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Purple. Nevertheless, Nintendo was clear in its press release on Wednesday: Japan represents 2.24 million sales when downloads are included, which doubles the figure of the retail rated here by Famitsu.

Ocarina of Time finally dethroned

It must be realized that the biggest start recorded so far by a Zelda in Japan dates back to the 386,234 cartridges sold by Ocarina of Time in the year of grace 1998. It is perhaps even in Japan that the change of franchise status will be the most obvious: Zelda will never again be there, this saga held in high esteem by fans and with decent sales, but a phenomenon realizing here a launch worthy of the best performances of Pokémon, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest or even Monster Hunter.

On the console sales side, the Switch logically benefits from this event release and still has enough breath to offer itself a week with more than 83,000 sales, while its total park in the archipelago is approaching 30 million. In a context of tsunami in favor of the construction game of machines to torture the Korogus, the PS5 is still doing well with nearly 42,000 consoles sold. With 3.5 million machines installed in Japan, you will also be delighted to learn that the PS5 is now ahead of the WonderSwan and that its next target is none other than the Mega Drive.
