Do you use ChatGPT, but are you regularly confronted with its limitations regarding recent events? So good news: the deadlines for your knowledge have been extended.
This Monday, during its first “Dev Day” conference, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, announced new knowledge deadlines for GPT-3.5 and GPT-4.0. For GPT-3.5, the date changes from September 2021 to January 2022. For the new version of GPT-4, named GPT-4 Turbo, the new date is set for April 2023.
ChatGPT’s knowledge limitation in time limits its effectiveness as a research tool. The only way to get around this limitation to get real-time information, at present, is to use the “Browse with Bing” feature, which is reserved for ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed frustration with previously set deadlines. “We are as annoyed as all of you – probably more – that knowledge of GPT-4 stops at 2021,” he said during Dev Day. “We will do everything we can to never again let knowledge become so outdated. »
GPT-3.5 testing
To test his new knowledge, I launched ChatGPT in GPT-3.5 mode and asked him a simple question:
What major events happened in November 2021?
The chatbot then provided me with a list of specific events that took place during the month, including the 26e United Nations conference on climate change, the state of research against the Covid-19 pandemic and preparations for the launch of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.

GPT-4.0 testing
For GPT-4.0, I had to ask ChatGPT not to use the Browse with Bing tool, so I could verify its new knowledge.
I asked him several questions relating to events that had occurred over the past few months. In some cases, ChatGPT initially struggled to find the right information. I had to point out to him that his new updates should allow him to provide the correct answers. After apologizing for its confusion, the chatbot was finally able to provide accurate and up-to-date results.
