Ford wants to rely more and more on electric cars – and is not alone. But the industry is facing a price problem, electric cars are becoming more and more expensive. Ford has found a solution that should make e-cars significantly cheaper.

Cheap e-cars: Ford wants to save costs with China batteries

In order to keep the costs for the Stromer – above all the flagship Mustang Mach e – as low as possible when ramping up production, Ford wants to use new battery technology in the future. Thanks to lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFP), the Production costs will be reduced by 10 to 15 percent in the future.

However, Ford does not want to change the battery technology for all of its electric cars. Instead, the existing range is being expanded. This also makes it easier to cope with the tense supply situation. The new batteries from CATL are to be used both in the Mustang Mach e and in the latest electric car from Ford, the F 150 Lightning. However, the electric pickup is intended for the US market.

The LFP batteries are to be installed in the Mustang Mach e from next year. They will also do their part to expand the Mustang into the most powerful electric model of the Americans. With the opening for LFP batteries, Ford is not only reducing costs. The carmaker also secures the necessary resources to be able to continue to build electric cars in the coming years. A total of 600,000 e-cars are to be built in the coming year, and 2 million electric vehicles are to be built annually by 2026.

According to its own statements, Ford already has the required battery reserves in stock for 2023. For the following three years, you already achieve coverage of 70 percent – one good news for Ford fans looking to splurge for years to come. Because the models are in demand, as with other car manufacturers, the Stromer production for the current year will probably also be sold out in the coming morning.

It remains to be hoped that Ford will pass on the savings from LFP batteries to customers. The chances are good, because Ford also wants to have a say in the race for affordable electric vehicles.
