Check laptop battery performance in Windows 10 & 11 – how it works

The lifespan of a laptop battery is influenced by many factors. If you notice any unusual wear or would like to know in general how the performance of your battery is, you can easily check this: In Windows 10 and 11 there is a tool that generates a battery report with all important key figures. We show you how it works.

Create battery report on Windows 10 and 11

The procedure for creating a battery report is the same for both Windows versions:

First, open Command Prompt or Windows PowerShell

as an administrator.

You can either locate the console apps from the Start menu or right-click the Start icon to bring up Windows PowerShell/Terminal.

Enter the following command in the console and confirm it with [Enter]:

powercfg/batteryreport

The system then creates a battery report in the form of an HTML file and shows you the corresponding storage location (by default the user folder in the system drive). Use the file explorer to navigate to the appropriate directory and double-click the HTML file to open it in the browser.

Among other things, you can see the history of the battery capacity, various usage statistics and a comparison of your full charge capacity with the design capacity of the manufacturer. This shows how much the battery performance has already decreased.

Tips for extending battery life

The fact that a laptop battery deteriorates over time is quite normal and unfortunately cannot be prevented. However, there are a few tips to slow down this process and preserve battery life as much as possible:

  • Avoid complete discharges and (constant) full charges. A charge status in the range of 40 to 80 percent is ideal.

  • Some manufacturers allow you to “freeze” the charge capacity to about two-thirds while the laptop is plugged into the power adapter. Use this function if available.

  • Only use original power adapters to charge your laptop.

  • Make sure that the battery is well ventilated and does not heat up too much. Never leave your laptop in the sun and, if necessary, use special laptop pads to cool it.
