IS kills 13 police officers in Iraq

The Islamic State terrorist militia has been largely defeated militarily for years in Iraq. However, the Islamists repeatedly carry out attacks against Iraqi security forces. An attack in Kirkuk lasts for several hours.

In northern Iraq, 13 police officers were killed in an attack by the Islamic State (IS) jihadist militia. IS fighters attacked a checkpoint of the Iraqi federal police south of Kirkuk that night, said a high-ranking Iraqi officer. The attack lasted several hours.

In 2014, IS overran large parts of Iraq and Syria and proclaimed a “caliphate”. By 2019, the Islamists had been repulsed and largely defeated militarily. However, militia cells are still active in various countries. In what was once the heartland of northern Iraq, they regularly carry out attacks against the Iraqi security forces.

Last week, the Afghan IS subsidiary Islamic State Province of Khorasan (IS-K) carried out a suicide attack at Kabul airport. Dozens of people were killed, including 13 US soldiers. After the Taliban, who were hostile to ISIS, seized power in Afghanistan, the US military had secured the capital’s airport until the beginning of this week.

Most of the US troops were withdrawn from Iraq under the former US President Donald Trump. His successor Joe Biden announced in July that US combat operations in the country would be discontinued at the end of the year. There are currently 2,500 US soldiers stationed in Iraq.
