Chemical-free: clean the dishwasher gently with household remedies

Are you getting unpleasant smells from the dishwasher? Time for a thorough cleaning! These are the most important tips.

Unfortunately, the dishwasher cannot rid itself of dirt and debris without help. However, this is important for a long service life and proper washing results. Gentle household remedies are better for the dishwasher and the environment than chemical clubs.

Coarse dirt deposits can be easily removed from the dishwasher with conventional handles. To do this, you should take a close look at the following machine parts:

Sieve insert

This use holds back leftover food. Over time, fat residues, in the worst case mold and bacteria, accumulate. Such deposits are gently and thoroughly removed with a dish brush. If necessary, a mild detergent improves the cleaning result.

Spray arms

Limescale and foreign bodies reduce the permeability of the spray arms in the long term. The result is unclean wash results. A hard jet of water and a toothpick are usually sufficient for mechanical cleaning.

Drain

The drain must be checked at the latest when a decrease in the drainage speed of the dishwasher is noticeable. Foreign bodies can usually be carefully knocked out and smaller residues washed away.

Seals and joints

Seals and door joints should be cleaned of deposits at least once a month. A damp cloth with a little vinegar cleaner is usually sufficient for this. This prevents the colonization of germs or harmful mold.

Post-cleaning

Once all the components of the dishwasher have been thoroughly cleaned, idle mode is used. A thorough cleaning result is achieved by adding baking soda and vinegar essence. To do this, sprinkle a maximum of two tablespoons of baking soda evenly on the bottom of the empty dishwasher. Pour 20 milliliters of vinegar essence into the powder compartment. Then run a simple wash program that is as hot as possible.

Caution: Do not open the machine until it has completely cooled down, as the steam can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract.

Use citrus fruits, baking soda and cola as home remedies

The results of chemical cleaning agents are not necessarily better than those of tried and tested home remedies. These should also be preferred in terms of the environment:

Citrus fruits are brilliant kitchen gadgets for cleaning up. For example, the machine calcifies slower or not at all if the remaining lemon peel is washed in the crockery basket when washing. This home remedy removes them even if there are already strong limescale deposits.

Soda neutralizes unpleasant odors in the dishwasher. Simply add a teaspoon of it to the rinse cycle. Soda cleans the machine components thoroughly without attacking metal or plastic.

Sometimes it happens: cookware or cutlery were not dishwasher safe after all. The resulting rust film would attack the contents and the dishwasher and even shorten its service life. A few splashes of cola on a cloth will help you identify such stains.
