The viral video is now even influencing European sales. No wonder, because the serum costs just 7.20 euros!

What is a chemical peel?

Even complexion and faded scars? Sounds great. Chemical peel? Uhh, please ?! That doesn't sound too dangerous – and it actually isn't. Because a chemical peel always contains differently concentrated acids, which ensure that the upper layer of skin peels off. Yes, it sounds damn gross, but that's exactly how it works. Who remembers the episode of "Sex and the City" in which Carrie celebrates her book release and Samantha appears with a veil in front of her face? Well, that was the painful result of a chemical peel! But don't worry, a light, superficial peeling does not end as "beef carpaccio", as Carrie Samanthas lovingly describes the red face full of scraps of skin.

It is only with deep chemical peels that are offered by dermatologists that the skin is penetrated so deeply that major injuries that result in more intensive follow-up treatment can occur.

A basic distinction is made between three chemical peels: superficial, medium-deep and deep peels, each containing differently concentrated acids. Usually the acids alpha-hydroxy acid, short AHA (e.g. glycolic acid) and beta-hydroxy acid, short BHA (salicylic acid) are used. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or phenol are often used for deep chemical peels.

What can a chemical peel do?

Depending on the intensity of the peeling, different results can be achieved. With a superficial chemical peel, which contains 30% concentrated AHA, only the upper skin layer is removed. Light skin blemishes and pigment disorders can be removed or lightened with regular use.

Chemical peels with BHA have a similar effect. However, these are particularly suitable for blackhead-troubled skin and cause less skin irritation due to the anti-inflammatory properties of the BHA. In addition to The Ordinary's AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution, there are also other superficial peels that can be used well at home. The T.L.C. Sukari baby facial by Drunk Elephant promises baby-soft skin with a concentration of 25% AHA and 2% BHA. The Facial Radiance AHA Intensive Peel by First Aid Beauty In addition to AHA, it is also enriched with activated carbon, making it the perfect peel for skin prone to acne.

Medium-depth chemical peels with trichloroacetic acid penetrate 0.45 millimeters deeper into the skin and can also reduce minor wrinkles around the mouth and eyes. The greatest results are achieved by deep chemical peels with phenol or higher concentrated trichloroacetic acid. However, it must be clear here that due to the deeper penetration of the acid into the skin, the risk of injury is greater. These peels should always be done by a professional dermatologist, as they really involve a significant amount of aftercare.

What should you watch out for with a chemical peel?

It is important that you slowly introduce your skin to the acid treatment even with a superficial peeling. Skin that is not used to acids reacts quickly and irritably and skin irritation can occur. In addition, the light chemical peel should never be used more than 10 minutes more than twice a week. Remember, you are directly attacking your upper skin layer, which is peeling off!

That is why it is especially important to apply sun protection after peeling. The new layer of skin that forms after peeling is logically very sensitive to the sun and therefore needs extra protection. If you are not sure whether a chemical peel is the right one – whether superficial, medium-deep or deep, then you should definitely visit a dermatologist who can give you the right advice.
