Cherbourg mosque defaced with Islamophobic tags

A complaint was filed after the discovery of Islamophobic tags on the walls of the Cherbourg mosque. According to photos posted on social networks, tags including death threats or even “justice for Thomas, here we are in France” were written in red on the gate of the mosque located in Octeville and in the surrounding streets.

Islamophobic tags were discovered on Saturday morning on the walls of the mosque in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, in Manche, and a complaint was filed, the prefecture said on Saturday. Tags including death threats or even “justice for Thomas, here we are in France”, in reference to the teenager who died after being stabbed leaving a village ball in Drôme, were written in red on the gate of the mosque located in Octeville and in the surrounding streets, according to photos posted on social networks and local media.

“A complaint was filed, and the prosecutor was seized of the case,” indicates the prefecture. “All the readings were carried out this morning, which made it possible to erase these tags,” she specifies in a press release.

“A heinous racist act”

The prefect of Manche Xavier Brunetière, who visited the site, “condemns with the greatest firmness this Islamophobic act and provides his support to the entire Muslim community”, according to the press release.

The mayor of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, Benoît Arrivé, who was also on site, denounced on to bring them to justice.
