Cherries: With these tips, the fruits last longer

The cherry season is in full swing. So that you have something of the fruit for a long time, you should store it properly.

Summer time is cherry time: the red fruits are in season in Germany until the end of July. However, the round delicacies are very sensitive and, if stored incorrectly, mold will develop after a few days. In order to keep cherries as long as possible, fruit fans should note a few things when picking and storing them.

The stem makes the difference

Whether picking or in the supermarket: Always pay attention to the handle. Without the green stem, cherries lose their juice and dry out. In addition, bacteria or fungi get into the pulp through the open area and there is a risk of mold. When shopping, also make sure that the stem is juicy green and smooth. It is a sign of freshness.

Important: once picked, cherries do not ripen. Therefore, one should only buy or pick the fruits when they are ripe and bright red. Cracked cherries – stay away! First, this is an indication that the cherry has received too much rain, which is why it often tastes watery. Second, the open spots attract fruit flies.

Store cherries: out of the plastic

After buying or picking it is important to store the cherries properly. In the supermarket, the cherries are often packed in plastic bags. When you get home, you should take out the fruit immediately. Because the air can only circulate poorly in the bags or trays, which leads to mold. It is better to put it in a can and line it with kitchen paper – this absorbs the excess moisture.

The fruits keep in the fridge for two to three days. Cherries should only be washed shortly before consumption. This prevents premature mold growth.

Freeze or boil

If you want to eat cherries later, you can simply freeze them. Cherries keep in a freezer bag for several months. You have two options: freeze with or without a core. With the core you lose less liquid, without the core you have less effort later. Another possibility: Process the fruit into a jam. Bring the cherries to the boil with jellied sugar and pour into sterile glasses.
