Chiara Mastroianni: how she discovered that her mother, Catherine Deneuve, was a star

Chiara Mastroianni is the daughter of two sacred movie monsters. But for a long time, she ignored that her parents, and in particular, her mother, Catherine Deneuve, was a movie star.

Chiara Mastroianni is back on the front of the stage, but at the theater this time in the play Le Ciel de Nantes. In full promotion, the actress granted an interview to Madame Figaro, this Thursday, February 17. She talked about her career, but also his family especially his parents. The daughter of Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni explains that for a long time she ignored that her parents were famous. “Until the age of 12, I was educated in a Montessori institute in Paris, where no one cared who was who…”she says.

“I had seen my mother in Peau d’Âne, but I found it normal that she made films or the cover of magazines since I only knew this universe”, continues Chiara Mastroianni. And to add: “Ditto with my father, whom I accompanied on vacation to his film sets.” She then revealed when she realized how famous her mother was: “And then, one day, my mother came back from America with a picture of her with Miss Piggy from the Muppet Show, of which I was a huge fan. That day, I deduced that she must be someone very important”she jokes today.

Cinema, a common passion for the family

Her passion for cinema, Catherine Deneuve transmitted it to her daughter. In August 2020, Benjamin Biolay’s ex confided in significant memories of his childhood in an interview with Elle. Chiara Mastroianni then mentioned “an extraordinary treasure box a small notebook, very well done, very playful, with hundreds of titles listed, classified by number”. And explain: “It matched the hundreds of VHS tapes she had recorded herself : films that were shown at the “Ciné-Club”, at the “Midnight Cinema” on the public channels, which then broadcast many more. A real private film library, with nuggets, it was very formative.”
