Dogs are more insured than cats in France. Even though it’s a drop in the ocean and 5% of pets are covered by health insurance, owners tend to study options closely for dogs, more than for cats.

Owners of French Bulldogs, American Staffordshire Terriers, German Shepherds and Chihuahuas are particularly sensitive to the issue because these are animals that present high levels of disease due to genetic predispositions that make them more vulnerable. They represent almost one in two animal insurance contracts in France and 7 in 10 quotes.

The principle of animal insurance is simple: the contract includes an annual reimbursement amount and a more or less wide range of care covered, depending on a percentage. The contract is also constructed by block. That of care includes the annual consultation with the veterinarian, x-rays and medications. And that of surgery includes hospitalization, analyzes and living expenses. Euthanasia and/or funeral costs can also be covered, as an option with a maximum amount between 200 and 600 euros depending on the contracts.
