Chills and laughter

Zapping Décrypté will take up its summer quarters. But, we won’t leave you without a recommendation. Here’s what to read and watch during the month of August.

Dont’ breathe 2: the path to redemption

The first part of Don’t Breathe featured a trio of burglars who had come to rob a blind veteran. Blind, maybe, but above all, a war veteran and Norman didn’t really let himself go. The end of the film suggested a sequel, a sequel available on DVD.

We find Norman, adoptive father of a little girl. He prepares her for the dangers she could face in her life, at the cost of a certain social isolation. Unfortunately, this training will prove useful when a team of criminals decides to target them.

The sequel is better than the first part. Very fast, without downtime, engaging, held by very good actors, it’s a successful bet for this horror film and we can’t wait: for the third part to be available. Don’t breathe – the house of darkness is available on Netflix and Don’t breathe 2 is available on DVD.

Salt: Department V in the midst of a pandemic

If you are a regular at this column, you know that it is impossible to escape the investigations of department V. The last volume is available in France, soberly titled Sel. We find Carl, Assad, Rose and Gordon, immersed in an old affair, against the backdrop of a pandemic.

This time, it is Gordon who will find himself at the heart of the story, reluctantly, where religion, moral values, epidemic and also a nail gun are mixed. As for Assad, who had been left weakened in victim 2117, all is not rosy for him.

Salt is Department V’s ninth investigation and based on the conclusion, a tenth installment should already be in the works. We hope it won’t be the last, as the saga is engaging and intelligent. Sel is available in print and digital.

The butterfly effect: closer to the book

The shock duo who had shot the first four parts of the Department V investigations had indicated that they were not continuing the adventure. Suffice to say that the surprise was great when we received a press release, indicating the release on DVD of the butterfly effect, the fifth part of the investigations of department V.

Let’s start with the positives: the story is generally respected and the actors are physically closer to the characters in the book than in the first four parts. It’s a good thriller that looks good, if you’ve read the book.

This is the big negative point of the film: if you haven’t read the book, you don’t really understand the story. Some elements are missing and it’s hard to keep the thread. We will only recommend it for fans of the series. The Butterfly Effect is available on DVD.

Manifest: tempus fugit

Manifest is a series, available on Netflix. A group of travelers boards a plane, departing from Jamaica. They land in New York, five years later. But, for them, the journey only lasted a few hours. Where have they been for five years? What happened to them?

If you’re a fan of Stephen King, you’ll love this fast-paced series. There is a mixture between the Langoliers, Under The Dome (the series, not the book) and a hint of government conspiracy, present in all good American series.

The first three seasons are available on Netflix and the fourth should arrive soon, although the date is not yet known. Don’t hesitate to discover this captivating series: we won’t tell you more so as not to spoil your suspense, but know that you won’t be disappointed.

Piranha 2 3D: small, but voracious

We remembered the extraordinary Piranha 3D, which was a monument of horror comedy. Following a natural event, prehistoric piranhas are released and begin to snack on vacationers who have come to celebrate Spring Break. In the second part, our critters manage to settle in an aquatic amusement park.

We advise you not to watch it with children, because of certain scenes that are both sexual and horrifying, very explicit, but very funny. However, if you want to be guaranteed to laugh for 1 hour and 20 minutes, tune into Amazon Prime.

Bonus point: the realism of certain scenes. When the piranhas start to land, what do the vacationers do? They film for social media. At this stage of the reading, you fully understand what is next in the scene. This is what we call, in our jargon, a magnificent Darwin Award. Note also a small review of video sharing platforms, which we will let you discover. Piranha 2 3D is available on Prime Video.

At the heart of the Z: A journalist infiltrated Éric Zemmour’s campaign

Vincent Bresson infiltrated Eric Zemmour’s campaign for a few months and made a book out of it. Who can read it? Mainly, people who have not followed the election campaign from very far away. Politics junkies may not learn much. The most interesting points are the flagrant amateurism of the campaign team and the digital strategy deployed.

Thus, we learn that the headquarters was quite easy to infiltrate and that anyone could have made a night visit there to steal documents. Éric Zemmour’s office was – according to the journalist – never locked. Despite the means put on the table, the campaign was run by amateurs, who rested on the wind.

Which brings us to the other strong point of the book: the digital strategy put in place. Without going so far as to say that everything was bogus, everything you saw on social networks concerning Éric Zemmour was artificial. At the maneuver, a team whose job was to make believe in spontaneous and sincere impulses in favor of the far-right candidate. A new demonstration that a click is not worth a vote. Au cœur du Z is available in print and digital format.

Zapping decrypted wishes you a great holiday and will see you again in September.
