China: Manufacturing activity accelerates to 13-month peak

BEIJING, April 1 (Reuters) – Manufacturing activity in China grew at its fastest pace in 13 months in March, a private survey showed on Monday, while confidence among industry leaders reached an 11-month high , in a context of growth in new domestic and foreign orders.

The manufacturing PMI index calculated by Caixin/S&P Global rose last month to 51.1 from 50.9 in February, beating the consensus which stood at 51.

This is an increase for a fifth consecutive month. The threshold of 50 separates contraction and expansion of activity.

Published after better than expected data on Chinese exports and retail sales, this survey confirms a solid start to the year for the world’s second largest economy. (Reporting Liangping Gao and Ryan Woo; French version Jean Terzian)
