China rushes to counter macOS and Windows with its own operating system

The success of machines running on an American operating system seems to have revived certain Chinese ambitions. The country’s government is currently at work to accelerate the effort that is supposed to lead to the creation of a Chinese OS that can be used anywhere in its territory.

Beijing does not necessarily see Apple’s breakthrough in the PC market with a very positive eye. The arrival of the firm’s ARM chips has recently propelled the power level of its computers to a new level and this seems to please consumers.

MacBook sales have increased in recent years. And it is to stem the possibility of dependence on a technology of American origin that the Chinese government would have taken measures to concretize its ambition: to create its own operating system.

A system capable of competing with the American giants

It’s the South China Morning Post which reports that the country has created an open platform with a view to accelerating the development of its own home operating system. This would eventually allow them to reduce their dependence on foreign systems such as Windows and macOS which dominate the market.

The country appealed for its realization to Kylinsoft, a subsidiary of China Electronics Corp, a company owned by the Chinese state. The company was given the task of creating an open source community using a platform called “openKylinwhich allows programmers to publish and share the computer code necessary to create this operating system.

The company has also partnered with 10 other Chinese entities to accomplish this task, including the National Industrial Information Security Development Research Center. This effort is supposed to further stimulate local production of technology in the context of tensions between the United States and China.

An ambition that is slow to be realized

This quest for a competitive national operating system is not new and some options are already available on the market. Kylin was originally developed in 2001 by the National University of Defense Technology before being licensed to Kylinsoft for commercial application since 2014. Prior to that, it was mainly used for military and government computer systems and had not made a real breakthrough towards more mainstream use.

Early versions of the system included FreeBSD code while later versions are Linux-based. The country also runs its own open-source platform called Gitee, which is supposed to counter Microsoft’s GitHub site. Kylinsoft currently offers three operating systems named V10, V14 and NeoKylin V7.0. The V10 system being the one with the greatest CPU compatibility.
