China warns the US – speculation about Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan is overturning – News

  • The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, arrived in Malaysia on Tuesday as part of her Asia trip.
  • It is still unclear whether the politician will also travel to Taiwan despite warnings from China.
  • There has been speculation in recent days that the third-highest ranking American is unlikely to travel to Taiwan.

Taiwan’s military has increased its combat readiness in the face of threats from China ahead of US leader Nancy Pelosi’s expected visit to Taipei on Tuesday.

A US Air Force jet carrying Pelosi to Malaysia left the capital Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday morning. This is reported by the flight tracking website Flightradar24 and Reuters witnesses. According to Reuters, it is still unclear whether Pelosi or her delegation are on board the plane.

Beijing had threatened the United States with consequences in this case. “Those who play with fire will perish,” Chinese leader Xi Jinping warned US President Joe Biden in a phone call last Thursday.

The Taiwanese military has increased its combat readiness ahead of Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, which is expected on Tuesday. According to the CNA news agency, citing a source, the order was issued in response to the threat posed by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army and its maneuvers with target practice.

How far China’s manoeuvres, military movements, sea area closures and sudden flight schedule changes are directly related to Pelosi’s possible visit is still unclear.

The increased readiness was ordered until Thursday noon, according to CNA. In the two-stage alarm system, however, it is not yet a classification for the “emergency”, but rather a “normal operational readiness”.

In addition, the United States has moved four warships to the waters east of Taiwan, including the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan.

On Tuesday afternoon (Swiss time), several news agencies reported that the website of Taiwanese President Tsai Ingwen was briefly unavailable, presumably due to a hacker attack. The authorities confirmed a failure of around 20 minutes. The website is now available again.

From the point of view of the Chinese leadership, Taiwan is part of the People’s Republic, although it was already governed independently before it was founded in 1949. That is why Beijing firmly rejects official contacts from other countries to the government in Taipei, referring to its “One China Doctrine”.

The White House warned Beijing of an escalation. “There is no reason for Beijing to turn a possible visit, consistent with long-standing US policy, into a crisis or conflict,” said Security Council communications director John Kirby. The US would not engage in “saber rattling”. At the same time, the United States will not be intimidated.

Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan would be historic

A visit by the third-highest ranking American would be the highest-ranking US visit to Taipei in decades. A Taiwanese MP previously confirmed press reports to the German Press Agency that Pelosi may arrive in Taipei from Malaysia on Tuesday evening local time.

Democratic Taiwan is not on the official itinerary, which includes Singapore and Malaysia, South Korea and Japan. But Beijing fears that Pelosi could ignore Chinese warnings. The US Democrat has long planned to visit Taiwan to take a stand against the threats from China.
