Following his compatriots Innosilicon and Jingjiawhich a few months ago revealed graphics cards of their own, the Chinese Moore Threads this week presented two GPUs of its own, including one intended for gaming.
Founded in October 2020, the Chinese group Moore Threads presented its first graphics cards this week. For the moment, the young company is content with two models: the MTT S60, dedicated to players and workstations, and the MTT S2000 intended this time for servers.
The power of a GTX 1070
In terms of specifications, the two cards are based on a GPU engraved in 12 nm and on the architecture designed in-house by Moore Threads: MUSA (for Moore Threads Unified System Architecture).
Designed for desktop PCs and gaming, the MTT S60 has 2048 MUSA cores coupled with 8 GB of LPGDDR4X memory. The card is equipped with a blower for cooling and develops 6 TFLOPs of computing power according to its manufacturer. Launched in 2016, the GTX 1070 developed a similar level of performance (approximately 6.5 TFLOPs), in the same way as Xbox One X in 2017. We are therefore not on a card capable of wobbling the current graphics solutions of ‘AMD, NVIDIA or even Intel, but it should be comfortable at 1080p.
In theory, it is also capable of supporting advanced features, such as global illumination, spatiotemporal anti-aliasing, physical rendering, soft shadows, reflections, and volumetric light. Moore Threads also mentions support for 8K codecs and AV1. The MUSA architecture is also supposed to be compatible with OpenCL, SYCL, CUDA, Vulkan, DirectX, or even OpenGL / GLES. We finally learn Tom’s Hardware that the physics engine (called Alphacore) developed by Moore Threads is able to work with Unity, Houdini and Unreal.
Dedicated this time to the cozy sector of servers, the MTT S2000 is for its part equipped with 4096 MUSA cores, supported by 32 GB of VRAM. It can develop 12 TFLOPs of computing power and is content on the other hand with a passive dissipation system.
Partnerships signed with Chinese players in the PC and Gaming world
At the head of Moore Threads, a man of experience: Zhang Jianzhong. According to IT Home, this is a former executive of NVIDIA in China. Unknown in our latitudes, he would have been deeply involved in the graphics industry for 15 years and currently has an experienced team for the development of current and future Moore Threads solutions.
This new company, which is difficult to see venturing outside of China in the immediate future, has for the rest already succeeded in signing some interesting agreements with Chinese players in the PC world, such as Lenovo. Tencent would also be among its partners. We are therefore not dealing with a low-level outsider, but rather with a company which, obviously, intends to make a name for itself in the GPU market in China.
