TAIPEI, Aug 6 (Reuters) – Chinese warplanes and warships carried out mock attack drills on Taiwan on Saturday, Taiwanese authorities said, in retaliation for a visit by Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives , which also prompted Beijing to suspend talks with the United States in several areas.
Nancy Pelosi’s visit earlier this week to Taiwan, which China claims as an integral part of its territory, provoked the ire of Beijing and gave rise to unprecedented Chinese military exercises, including the firing of ballistic missiles over the capital of Taiwan, Taipei.
These Chinese military exercises are to last until midday on Sunday.
On Saturday morning, Taiwan’s defense minister said many Chinese ships and planes carried out missions in the Taiwan Strait, drills which Taipei says are part of a mock attack on the main island of Taiwan. .
