Chinese Loongson announces CPUs capable of competing with Ryzen Zen3 by 2023

The builder of processors Chinese Loongson recently shared an ambitious roadmap to 2025.

It started with the presentation of a new series of processors for servers displaying up to 16, then in the future 32 and 64 cores. Over the coming years, the company plans to offer several generations of processors for PCs in parallel. These will be equipped with a brand new architecture capable, according to the simulations, of competing with the Ryzen Zen3 and even beyond, at a very competitive price.

The Dragon slowly takes flight

At present, Loongson has the 5000 generation of PC processors with four and sixteen cores for the 3A5000 and 3C5000/3C5000L series. These are based on the LoongArch architecture using 64-bit LA464 cores.

According to simulations, the 3A5000 integrating four cores clocked up to 2.5 Ghz can compete with Armv8 eight-core processors as well as 10th generation processors from Intel based on the Comet Lake architecture, at least on the performance of a single thread.

With the 6000 generation coming in 2023, Loongson plans to up the ante with LA664 cores this time. As a result, the 3C6000 and 3D6000 processors, with 16 and 32 cores respectively, would be able to stand up to AMD Ryzen 3 and EPYC processors.

Small steps policy

You will probably say that competing with a generation of processors released two years ago is not enough to break a duck’s three legs. For Loongson though, it’s a first step in catching up on modern chips from industry leaders Intel and AMD.

From 2024 to 2025, the Chinese company also intends to release the 7000 generation of these processors, ranging from 16 to 64 LA664 cores, but with a modified node in order to increase performance per watt. It is therefore not impossible that this generation presents itself as a greater challenge for the giants of the industry.

Beyond these considerations, Loongson’s products are in essence offered at a particularly low price, since they are primarily intended to equip the Chinese technology industry. If its 6000 and 7000 generations manage to compete with even the low-end solutions from AMD and Intel, it will come at a very competitive price.

Time will tell, however, if Loongson’s ambitions materialize or not.
