Aug 4 (Reuters) – Five ballistic missiles fired by China during Beijing’s unprecedented large-scale military exercises around Taiwan appear to have landed in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on Thursday, Japan’s Minister of Defense said. Defense, Nobuo Kishi.

These maneuvers, the largest ever undertaken by China in the Taiwan Strait, began at midday, exacerbating tensions in the region as never for 25 years.

“Seeing five Chinese missiles in Japan’s EEZ is a first,” Nobuo Kishi told reporters. “We protested strongly through diplomatic channels.”

These military exercises come in response to the visit to Taiwan by the speaker of the American House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, on Tuesday and Wednesday.

China has canceled a planned meeting between its foreign minister and its Japanese counterpart to express its displeasure after a statement by the heads of diplomacy of the G7 calling for the peaceful resolution of the dispute between Beijing and Taiwan.
