Researchers from OpenAI, Open Research, and the University of Pennsylvania conducted a study to visualize the future effects of language models, the technology that powers ChatGPT, on the job market.

To carry out their study, the scientists analyzed more than 1,000 occupations in the United States, then associated them with the tasks necessary to perform them. They then determined whether having access to a language model like GPT-4 could reduce the time it takes a worker to complete a specific task by at least 50%. Their results are categorical.

Manual trades will be the least affected

Nearly 80% of workers in the US could be affected in at least 10% of their job duties, while 19% of employees are at risk of seeing up to 50% of their job duties changed by the introduction of tools such as ChatGPT .

Unsurprisingly, high-income and intellectual jobs are most at risk. This corroborates a similar study carried out by researchers at Goldman Sachs, which established that the writing professions were the most threatened, in particular writers, poets, lyricists, or even journalists.

Nevertheless, the researchers of the study discussed here have listed 34 jobs that will not be exposed to the emergence of AI. If some of these trades seem very similar to each other, it is clear that they require, for the most part, manual know-how. Here they are :

  • Farm Equipment Operators
  • athletes
  • Automotive glass installers and repairers
  • Bus and truck mechanics
  • Masons
  • cooks
  • Cutters and tailors
  • Oil Rig Operators, Oil & Gas
  • Servers and kitchen helpers in the dining room and cafeteria
  • Dishwasher (restaurant dishes)
  • Dredge driver
  • Power line installers and repairers

Opinions on the matter differ

For their part, OpenAI and Google believe that AI will not replace humans, but will above all serve as a revolutionary tool to increase productivity.

In March, several thousand people, including leading researchers in the field of artificial intelligence, called for a halt to research into advanced AI tools to prevent their negative repercussions. Among the concerns of the signatories was the possibility of seeing many jobs replaced by AI.
