Christian Dior: Christian Dior postpones its highly anticipated show in Hong Kong

HONG KONG (Reuters) – French fashion brand Christian Dior has postponed its show in Hong Kong, initially scheduled for March, the Hong Kong government announced on Monday, without specifying the reason for the decision.

“We have just received notification from the organizer that the event will be postponed. In fact, postponements of large-scale events are common. We continue to host large-scale events in Hong Kong,” said the government in an email.

Dior did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment on the reasons for postponing the show.

The event was eagerly awaited by many players in the luxury sector, after the highly publicized Louis Vuitton fashion show led by singer Pharrell Williams last November.

Before the pandemic, Hong Kong attracted high-spending Chinese visitors, helping it weather falling global demand for multi-brand department stores and luxury brands.

But the city is now facing a decline in the number of wealthy Chinese visitors and tourism more focused on trendy places, publicized on the social network Instagram, than on the purchase of expensive branded items.

The rise of competing malls like China’s Hainan Island, changing consumer preferences and the rise of online shopping have fundamentally changed demand for luxury goods in Hong Kong and are beginning to reshape the economy tourist destination of the city, according to sector experts.
