Christiane Taubira has been an official candidate for the 2022 presidential election since January 15. Forty days before the first round, the one who began her political career with her ex-husband, Roland Delannon, however, only has 2.5% of the voting intentions. But who is this man who shared his life for almost twenty years?

“I am candidate for the presidency of the Republic, announced Christiane Taubira, on Saturday January 15, 2022, during a trip to the Croix-Rousse district, in Lyon. In forty days, the French will go to the polling stations for the first round of the 2022 presidential election. They will then have to choose who they will decide to send to the second round. The former Minister of Justice currently only counts 2.5% of voting intentions. This election could therefore be a disappointment for the one who began her political career with her ex-husband, Roland Delannon.

This former independence leader founded, in the 1970s, the Guyanese decolonization movement (MOGUYDE). A movement that Christiane Taubira joined in 1978, after studying economics in Paris. This is how the candidate for the presidential election of 2022 has met Roland Delannon. The following year they welcomed their first childLamine (42 years old). Three more followed : Nolywé (40 years old), Diawara (35 years old) and Djamila (33 years old). The former regional councilor of Guyana and the former leader of the Guyanese Workers’ Union (UTG) also married in 1987.

Accusations of attacks against Guyanese oil installations

A few years earlier, Roland Delannon would have been accused of having organized attacks against oil installations in Guyana. Charges for which he would have been sentenced to a year and a half in prison, which he would have served in the prison of La Santé, in Paris. During this period, Christiane Taubira would have lived in the hiding. But in the biography The Taubira Mysterywritten by Caroline Vigoureux, her ex-husband denied and claims not to have been imprisoned. Roland Delannon finally withdrew from his commitments as an independence activist, which allowed the couple to live more peacefully.

In 1992Christiane Taubira and her former husband founded the Walwari Party, of which she was president. The former Keeper of the Seals also ran in the 1993 legislative election and was elected MP for the first constituency of French Guiana. Roland Delannon was then his campaign manager. But if politics brought them togetherthis is also what separated them. The ex-husband of Christiane Taubira indeed presented, in the regional elections of 1998, a dissenting list without warning her. An episode that caused the breakup of the couplewho divorced in 2002, after fifteen years of marriage.

During an interview for Paris Matchin December 2013, she explained that she had not realized, at the time, of his share of responsibility in this separation. “I fought without being aware of the impact on my husband. I underestimated the weight of the social gaze in Guyanese society. I understood too late that this man, of very great value, called me for help fifty times. She was then talking about “heartache” and of “remorse”. An interview that Roland Delannon later described as “publicity shot” in The Taubira Mystery.
