This year, nearly 500,000 French people have not been able to celebrate traditionally because of the Covid-19. Whether they spent Christmas alone or with infected people, Europe 1 tells you about the somewhat special New Years Eve of these patients.

A Christmas 2021 that will remain etched in their memory. Toys, smiles around the tree … These are scenes that we usually have in mind when we think of Christmas. Nearly 500,000 French people according to Public Health France have been deprived of it this year. They tested positive for Covid-19 just before the holidays. So they spent a rather gloomy Christmas in isolation. “I made my New Year’s turkey on my own,” says Emmanuel, for whom the blow came a week ago when he discovered his positive test.

The 22-year-old young man then said goodbye to the foie gras, the log and especially the reunion with all his family who had come especially to Paris to see him. “I watched two or three films on Netflix all evening and afterwards, I fell asleep,” he narrates, detailing his rather dreary evening in his apartment in Évry en Essonne. A “difficult evening, but we had to”.

A New Year’s Eve in pajamas

And then there are those who did not spend Christmas alone, but among infected people. Tania, 13, and her whole family are bedridden due to Covid-19. On the program, therefore, a New Year’s Eve in pajamas and with a fever. “This year, there was no Christmas meal: no big meals, big tables, we just ate soup”, explains Tania.

“This morning, when we had to offer the gifts, everyone was coughing, we could hear it all over the house. This Christmas was catastrophic,” she concludes. After this spoiled party night, the whole family still hopes to be on their feet to enjoy the New Year’s Eve on December 31st.
