Christmas markets: do they have to be closed in 2020?

Will the contemplative time of the corona pandemic also fall victim, or can Christmas markets open? Markus Söder gives some hope.

Can Germans enjoy mulled wine and bratwurst at the Christmas market again this year, or will the whole country have to forego the cherished tradition because of the Corona crisis? Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (53) has spoken out in favor of Advent fun despite the pandemic. "You have to come up with clever concepts for the Christmas markets," explains the politician in an interview with "Welt am Sonntag".

Among other things, one could impose a mask requirement, limit alcohol consumption and set certain walking routes. "Then I can imagine the Christmas markets, which are, however, different from the normal ones – and only if the regional infection situation allows it," said Söder to "WamS".

At the same time, he warns against jeopardizing previous successes in the fight against the virus. A survey by "NDR Schleswig-Holstein" recently revealed that appropriate concepts for Christmas markets are already being worked on in the north. For example, there are initial plans in Flensburg, Neumünster and Lübeck. Kiel has already announced that, as things stand, all markets should take place.
