Warmth, cosiness and a pleasant smell are guaranteed by scented candles in winter. This is how the homemade variant succeeds.

Candles create a contemplative mood in the run-up to Christmas, especially if they spread an intense scent after lighting. What many do not know: The small lights can also be easily made at home. Only a few ingredients are required for this.

Step by step

You don't need a professional set for the homemade candle to succeed. A mason jar (preferably with a lid), a ready-made wax mixture (which can be found in many craft stores), a candle wick, a wooden stick, a pot and an empty tin can are used. Those who want to take care of the environment can also use leftover wax and candles or use biomass without petroleum or palm oil.

First, heat water in a large saucepan until it starts to steam. Then use the water in the tin to melt the wax. Meanwhile, cut the wick to size, tie it to the wooden skewer and place it over the mason jar. Now carefully pour the mixture into the mason jar. At the same time, make sure that the wick is centered and nice and tight. Just let the whole thing dry.

It all depends on the scented oil

If you want to give your candle an intense scent note, you only have to consider one further step: Before the wax is poured into the glass, you have to mix it with scented oil. There are no limits here. The varieties orange and cinnamon, for example, are Christmas. If you like it very special, you can also use gingerbread or baked apples. When mixing, only a few drops are usually enough. The oils are available online or in the drugstore.

Ideal as a gift

The homemade scented candles are also an ideal gift for Christmas. The present gets a personal touch with a little decoration and attention to detail. Small Christmas balls and ribbon can be attached to the glass. With a chalk pen you can also draw snowflakes on it or write loving messages. Important: Always screw the lid onto the candle as soon as it is no longer lit. In this way, the scent aromas are retained longer.
