Christofle cut, vinyl, Saint-James sweater … What Emmanuel Macron gave Joe Biden

Emmanuel Macron did not come hands free. On the sidelines of a state visit to the United States, the French president offered gifts to his American counterpart Joe Biden, but also to his companion Jill Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris. The common point of all these presents, 24 days before Christmas, is that they are labeled of “French” origin. Indeed, these are products or cultural works from France.

A nod to the Biden couple

First, the president brought Joe Biden a cup from the Christofle house, created in 2012, “in homage to the great era when Charles Christofle”, the founder of the eponymous company, “crossed the Atlantic on board of the Normandy liner”, says the communication service of the Elysée. “This cup symbolizes the first links between France and the United States of America”, adds this press release, which specifies that this cup “integrates in the background the beam of lictor ‘Presidency of the Republic'”.

Also, the Head of State wanted to offer a vinyl record and a CD of the film’s soundtrack A man and a woman, directed in 1966 by Claude Lelouch. This film had also received the Palme d’Or at Cannes the same year. The services of the Élysée confide that this is the first film that Joe Biden and his companion Jill went to see at the cinema “during their first meeting”.

Finally, for the attention of the President of the United States, Emmanuel Macron gave a sweater from the French house Saint-James, based in the Manche, and a watch from the LIP Horlogerie brand, a factory originating from Besançon and created in 1867.

Gifts for Jill Biden and Kamala Harris

The President of the Republic also had a very special thought for the first lady Jill Biden. Emmanuel Macron sent him a copy of the book Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert and the work The Plague, The Fall, Exile and the Kingdom, and Selected Essays by Albert Camus.

Finally, the Head of State donated a model of the Ariane 5 rocket to Kamala Harris, the Vice-President of the United States. A gift as a nod to his first trip this Wednesday, to Washington, at NASA headquarters, where the president notably promoted the candidacy of astronaut Thomas Pesquet who wishes to join the Artemis project.

These special attentions come to calm a first day of negotiations on economic issues. Emmanuel Macron castigated Wednesday evening “super aggressive” subsidies provided for in Joe Biden’s climate plan, called Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), and which promote “made in USA” products.
