“As part of a routine check-up” he was diagnosed with cancer, Christoph Daum, 69, let his fans know via social media in autumn 2022. He then went into treatment that would “work very well” for him, he explained. About eight months later he reveals how he is doing.

“I feel good. In the first phase of my therapy, I underwent very intensive chemotherapy until December, which worked very well and eliminated all metastases,” was the positive news that he announced in the “Sport Bild” interview. He is currently “in phase two, immunotherapy” at the Cologne Cancer Center. “This should lead to the threatening cancer condition becoming a chronic one.”

However, there is no end in sight for the treatment for the football coach. “It would be wishful thinking to believe that we could conquer the cancer and say: It’s gone. For me it’s more about being able to say: We have it under control and I can grow old with it. A few more therapies will be needed for that.” , he explains. He has now started the immune therapy in Thailand in consultation with his doctor. “It was about just getting out and seeing something different after five months of commuting between the hospital and home during chemotherapy.”

“I quit smoking after 38 years”

The cancer was discovered in the former Bundesliga coach during a routine check-up last summer. “Irregularities occurred, as a result of which the lung carcinoma was discovered”. He can therefore only advise people over the age of 50 to take regular precautions. Up until the day of the diagnosis, Daum smoked. “I quit from one day to the next after 38 years. It’s purely a matter of will. That’s how I am,” says the 69-year-old.
