Director and cinema lover Christopher Nolan praises “Dune” by Denis Villeneuve as a “gift to film fans” – and indirectly as a cinema saver.

Christopher Nolan (51) is known for being one of the last remaining exponents of the pure cinema experience. The director of intelligent blockbusters like “Tenet” and “Inception” categorically rejects streaming services and sees the good old movie theater as the only real venue for films. “Dune” by colleague Denis Villeneuve (54) has now given Nolan’s faith in the cinema – although the science fiction epic in the USA starts at the same time on the streamer HBO Max.

In Germany, “Dune” was released on September 16, in the USA only recently on October 21. On this occasion, Nolan and Villeneuve met for the “Directors Cut Podcast” for a workshop discussion.

“Absolutely suitable for the big screen”

Nolan was full of praise for “Dune”: “It is one of the most seamless combinations of live-action photography and computer-generated visual effects that I have ever seen,” said the Briton. He has seen the film several times and discovered new details each time.

The “Dunkirk” director insisted on praising “Dune” as a film that required a big screen. “The way it’s made is absolutely perfect for the big screen. It’s a real treat and a real gift for movie fans everywhere – and thank you for that, Denis.”

When is “Dune 2” coming?

In the USA, “Dune” started on the first weekend with gross profits of 40.1 million US dollars. The film adaptation of the cult novel by Frank Herbert (1920-1986) has already grossed 223.2 million at a cost of 165 million.

Since Villeneuve’s film only tells the beginning of the saga, a second part is only a matter of form. But it has not yet been officially confirmed.
