Google generalizes a new feature that allows the “Incognito” tabs of its Navigator Chromium to be locked by a code or by the phone’s biometric authentication.

Until now, it was necessary to go through the experimental “flags” section of Chrome to activate this additional layer of security.

A universe perfectly isolated from the rest of navigation

The content of a phone or tablet is private only in the hands of its owner. It’s a completely different story if the device is stolen or loaned… Based on this observation, Google is taking a step forward in favor of the confidentiality of its users’ searches, via a new local protection, specific to the ‘device. ” You can [désormais] require biometric authentication when resuming a private browsing session that was interrupted “, Explained the firm in a blog post. In other words, if you’re using Chrome and switch apps, you’ll need to unlock your private tabs to access them. Without impact for the classic tabs which themselves always remain accessible.

A function that can be activated in a few seconds

To enable this option on your Android phone:

  1. Go to the settings of your Chrome browser, by tapping the icon with the three small dots superimposed at the top of the screen,
  2. Go to “Privacy and Security”,
  3. Enable “Incognito” tab locking when closing Chrome.

Once the lock is activated, you will need to enter your code or use your fingerprint or your face to access the private tabs of your browser. Otherwise, a neutral screen without sensitive information will present itself as a barrier to their access.

This update comes in the context of Google’s acceleration in terms of online security prevention. As such, the Californian giant has been working on a series of additional measures for Chrome. Among them, the refinement of its compromised password scanner and its guide to online security. Will this be enough to appease mistrust, including internal mistrust, with regard to its management of private life…?
