VRR is coming to Chrome OS in beta. A novelty that anchors Chromebooks a little more in the video game market.
Since their creation, Chromebooks have been seen as small productivity PCs, very practical for students, for example. When it comes to making more intensive use of them, however, questions arise and these computers have never been seen as gaming PCs… for the moment at least.
VRR is coming to Chrome OS
As noted by the About Chromebooks blog, Chrome OS version 101, available on the Dev channel, adds a feature that speaks volumes about Google’s ambitions. By activating the flag chrome://flags#enable-variable-refresh-rateChrome OS then supports the Variable Refresh Rateor VRR.
As a reminder, the VRR is a technology allowing to synchronize the refresh rate of the image according to the number of images per second produced by the displayed application. It is used in particular to avoid the effects of “tearing”, or image tearing, in video games. You may already know the principle on PC with G-Sync for Nvidia graphics cards or FreeSync for AMD cards.
In addition to the local improvements, the addition of Adaptativ Sync has also allowed Nvidia to significantly improve the fluidity of its GeForce Now cloud gaming offer with its RTX 3080 offer. Similar technology on Google Stadia could be considered.
Machines designed for gaming?
Despite the generally limited power of Chromebooks, Google is trying to attract gamers to its platform. In addition to cloud gaming compatibility and the presence of Android games via the Play Store, Google has also just announced the upcoming arrival of Steam (already available in alpha), the famous PC video game marketplace.
But let’s not forget that Chrome OS isn’t just a PC operating system, it can also power tablets,”the future of computingaccording to Google. Perhaps we could then imagine a valid competitor to the iPad?
