ChromeOS: How and why to send feedback to developers?

If you’re using a Chromebook and want to get the latest features before anyone else, the beta channel is ideal.

But that’s not its only interest: by registering as a “beta tester”, you can also make your contribution by sending feedback to the developers of the Google OS. This feedback may concern bugs you encountered, problems in the interface, or simply be suggestions to improve the experience on ChromeOS.

So, if you’ve signed up for the ChromeOS beta channel, here’s how to send “feedback” to developers, and what it should contain. And if you’re not using the beta version, but you have a Chromebook, you can also submit feedback to the developers, including any bugs you encounter in the OS.

What should feedback look like for ChromeOS?

To make your feedback useful and relevant, consider including the following information:

  • one or more screenshots (especially if it is a bug);
  • what you were doing when you encountered a problem;
  • steps to recreate the problem;
  • the version of ChromeOS you are using;
  • system logs (optional);
  • your contact details.

Remember that the more information you provide to the developer, the more quickly he or she will be able to resolve the problem that is hampering you.

How do I send feedback for ChromeOS?

1. Start your Chromebook

Log in to your Chromebook. Once logged in, you do not need to open any applications to submit your comment.

2. Submit a comment

Press the keys simultaneously Alt + Shift + i.

A new window opens, asking you to describe the problem you are experiencing. Once you have written your description, click Continue.

3. Access system logs

If you want to attach your system logs, which can be of great help to those reviewing your report, open Chrome and type the following text in the address bar:

chrome://network/#logs​

On the page that appears, click Store system logs and wait for the operating system to complete the task. System logs will be saved in a download file as system_logs_DATE.txt.zip (DATE is the date the logs were generated).

Here you can choose to include the configurations and separate the log files collected by debugd into a separate file.

4. Attach the logs to your comment

Return to your comment window. On the next page, select Add a file then, when the file manager opens, navigate to where you saved the system log to attach it to your message.

You can also add one or more screenshots illustrating the problem you are experiencing. On this same page, you will be able to select the email address you wish to associate with this feedback, and authorize Google to contact you regarding the problem you are experiencing. Once you have filled in all the information that concerns you, click on Send.
