Chromebooks are getting a major software update with the arrival of ChromeOS 124. On the menu, an aesthetic overhaul inspired by Android 12, increased productivity and features designed for more comfortable use.
This Thursday, May 2, after finally allowing native editing of Microsoft 365 files in ChromeOS, the Mountain View firm recently announced the progressive publication of ChromeOS 124 to Chromebook users. An announcement which has far from gone unnoticed, the American giant having frankly spared no effort to offer an update rich in new features. Without further ado, here is the list of the main new features awaiting you in the latest ChromeOS update!
ChromeOS takes another step towards Material You
The deployment of ChromeOS 124 to Chromebook owners is an opportunity for Google to offer “ a new quality of service (QoS) feature that ensures better prioritization of video conferencing and gaming application traffic on congested Wi-Fi networks “. In other words, you should soon see improvements in video playback, with “ less buffering “.
In another vein, the “Settings” section of ChromeOS now adopts a new style based on the Material You interface, bringing it closer to an Android tablet application in terms of aesthetics.
ChromeOS 124: better organization of windows for increased productivity
The new features brought with ChromeOS 124 don’t stop there: Google is now simplifying the configuration of multi-window mode. Concretely, when you hover over the maximize/reduce button of a window, a preview of your open windows is displayed on the other half of the screen. This feature, called Faster Split Screen by Google, is obviously reminiscent of the Snap Layouts function in Windows operating systems.
Google also increased the maximum mouse cursor size. Finally, the Fast Pair function, which offers you the possibility of pairing your mouse with a single click on ChromeOS, is also now available.
As a reminder, ChromeOS 124 is being deployed at the time of writing. As this new version will be rolled out to as many people as possible in the coming days, it is quite possible that you will not be immediately eligible for the update.
