Even months after a corona illness, many patients are still not fit. The phenomenon is called Long Covid. But it also occurs with other viral diseases. In order to research the causes and possible therapies, the state of Tyrol made 126,000 euros available for the Medical University of Innsbruck.
According to health judge Annette Leja (ÖVP), the aim of the project is to better characterize possible causes of chronic complaints after virus infections and to be able to offer patients effective therapies. For this purpose, the biochemical metabolic pathways of patients are examined after the disease.
The researchers hope to shed light on why symptoms such as fatigue, chest pain, sleep disorders, cognitive impairments or depressed mood persist in certain patients long after a viral illness. The state’s research funding is available for the next two years.
