In room 12 of the “interne” a veritable inferno flared up within seconds for reasons that are still unclear and spread throughout the ward. Roommate survived because he was walking down the corridor Sad fact: three male patients were unable to escape the hell of flames and died. The fourth roommate survived because he was walking down the corridor. All the helpers pitched in. However, hospital staff and the fire brigade risked their lives to bring 20 people to safety. According to the clinic management, all the helpers lent a hand and were even able to evacuate some of the bedridden people in no time at all. “It was pure hell!” the nurses first called out to us that we should definitely stay in the rooms. The fear was of course huge, it was pure hell!”, says Eva R. (69) from Ebergassing. For the sprightly pensioner Margarete K. (77), however, the mission was only a side note: “I did smell the smoke, But what should I do, I can’t delete it.” Fortunately, the woman from Mödling can leave the hospital again on Wednesday. Only one person was slightly injured during the rescue operation, two Florianis had to be treated for suspected smoke inhalation. Cigarette as the cause of the fire? Only two hours after the initial report, calm gradually returned to the hospital and the fire investigators from the responsible state criminal police office began their work. On Tuesday evening, the police said that a forgotten “Tschick” found under the 75-year-old’s bed may have caused the smoldering fire. Since the “heavy smoker’s” bed was near the tilted window, the smoke was able to escape for a long time. According to the police, a 78-year-old from the Mödling district and an 81-year-old from the Bruck/Leitha district died in addition to the 75-year-old full clarification of the cause: “The events of the last night are shocking. Our thoughts are with the victims and families. But now it is a matter of completely clarifying the course of the accident. ”In any case, the hospital in Mödling continues with restrictions. Efforts are being made to make the affected operating rooms usable again as quickly as possible.
