CINEMA: DC Studios, a new entity led by James Gunn and Peter Safran to adapt DC comics at Warner Bros. Discovery!

Between Zack Snyder’s Justice League which offered a new take on the 2017 film, a The Suicide Squad who wanted to erase memories Suicide Squad of 2016, the success of Joker and one The Batman whose approach broke completely with the rest of the DC Extended Universe, DC Movies has offered us a very heterogeneous set of films in recent years. Some are part of the same shared universe, while others, until proven otherwise, will remain independent productions.

The merger with Discovery and the arrival of President David Zaslav will however put some order in there, with a short-term vision that has been revised. A multitude of projects for HBO Maxincluding the film Batgirlwent by the wayside, The Penguin and maybe others spin-offs of The Batman are planned on the SVOD, Blue Beetle joined the list of upcoming feature films alongside Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Joker: Madness for Twoand above all, the Superman by Henry Cavill will return to the screen.

And to ensure the consistency of this near and distant future, David Zaslav and his teams have decided to make internal changes. Forget DC Movies and its president Walter Hamada, landed last week, Warner Bros. Discovery will now have an antenna called DC Studios who will report directly to the President. This studio will be co-directed by neither more nor less than Peter Safran, emblematic producer of Warner Bros. already behind several films DCand James Gunndirector of The Suicide Squad who is currently finishing his trilogy Guardians of the Galaxy at the house of marvel studios and should therefore no longer work with him after the release of the Flight. 3.

The first will take care of the business part, the second of the creation, for film, television and VODboth in live action only in animation. They should, however, mainly focus on DC Extended Universebecause the Joker of Todd Philipps will remain managed by Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy of Warner Bros.and we do not yet know if they will have a role to play in the universe of The Batman or whether it will remain led by Matt Reeves and other company executives.

“DC has some of the most entertaining, powerful and iconic characters in the world and I’m thrilled to have the singular and complementary talents of James and Peter joining our world-class team to oversee the creative direction of the DC Universe. Zaslav said in a statement. “Their decades of experience in film, their strong ties to the creative community and their proven track record as superhero fans around the world make them uniquely qualified to develop a long-term strategy in film, television and animation, and take this iconic franchise to the next level of creative storytelling. »

“We are honored to be stewards of these DC characters we have loved since we were kids,” Gunn and Safran said in a statement. “We look forward to collaborating with the world’s most talented writers, directors and actors to create an integrated, multi-layered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn and the rest of the stable of DC characters is matched only by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility that these characters represent. We are thrilled to reinvigorate the cinematic experience around the world by telling some of the biggest, finest and grandest stories ever told. »

With such ambitions, should we expect a reboot making a clean sweep of all or part of the productions already produced? Or to a simple reordering of the overall narration from the next feature films? No one knows at the moment. Waiting to know more, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is available from €2.99 on Prime Video.
