CINEMA: Fast & Furious 10, the director leaves filming, and it is expensive for Universal

The saga Fast & Furious seemed like a well run business, with an episode every two or three years for over 20 years, most directed by Justin Lin. The latter was behind the camera for Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift then for the episodes 4, 5, 6 and 9. Suffice to say that he knows the team and the producers well.

But this week, thunderclap: Justin Lin has left the set of Fast & Furious 10, just a few days after the start of the first shots. The director shared a statement not really explaining the reasons for his departure, stating only:

With support from Universal, I made the difficult decision to step back as director of Fast & Furious 10, while remaining on the project as a producer. In 10 years and five films, we have been able to film the best actors, the best stunts and the best car chases. On a personal note, as a child of Asian immigrants, I’m proud to have helped build the most diverse franchise in movie history. I will forever be grateful to the amazing cast, crew and studio for their support and for welcoming me into the Fast & Furious family.

As a reminder, Justin Lin had to realize this Fast & Furious 10, but also the eleventh and final installment of the franchise, which seems compromised. Filming is therefore at a standstill, and this puts Universal Pictures in a very delicate position, because the production company has to keep cast and crew on hand, which would cost them between $600,000 and $1 million a dayaccording to variety. The schedule of stars like Jason Momoa, Brie Larson and Charlize Theron is also important, all are expected on other sets in the coming weeks, the production of Fast & Furious 10 has no interest in dragging too long, Universal looking for other directors to replace Justin Lin, but it’s complicated. James Wan, David Leitch and F. Gary Gray, who have already directed opuses in the franchise, are all busy elsewhere, while Rob Cohen, who made the first film, has not shot anything since 2018, the fault of charges of sexual assault. The salvation ofUniversal could come from the star of the franchise Vin Diesel, very involved in the production of the franchise, producer of the films, but who lacks experience to direct such an ambitious feature film.

At present, Fast & Furious 10 no longer has a director, let’s cross our fingers so that a solution is quickly found and that the cinema release date set for April 5, 2023 is kept. As a reminder, several opuses of the franchise are available on Amazon Prime Video recently, you can subscribe against 49 € per year.
