After his recent remarks on superhero films, Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu, Oscar winner for Birdman and The Revenant, attacks modern cinema.
Invited to the London Film Festival to present Bardo, his new feature film produced and broadcast by Netflix, the director lamented that modern cinema favors style over substance.
The American newspaper variety reports his words:I don’t care about the quality of things. When I see young filmmakers, I am very sensitive to the way they express themselves. Today many things are beautiful, but there is a lack of soul.”
“People now need to be hand-fed”
The filmmaker pointed out that audience expectations have also changed, saying his “demanding” film 21 Grams is unlikely to be made today.
“I don’t know if we could have made 21 Grams today, because the public would be very irritated by this film. People now need to be hand fed“.

Presented in preview at the Venice Festival this summer, Bardo, a false chronicle of a few truths did not win unanimous support. The feature film worn by Daniel Giménez Cacho and Griselda Siciliani has been the subject of mixed reviews, in particular for its slowness and its length.
The Mexican filmmaker did not hesitate to return to the editing room and cut 22 minutes from the film, which now lasts 2 hours and 32 minutes without credits. Iñárritu then explained to IndieWire : “The first time I saw my film was with 2,000 people in Venice. It was a great opportunity to see what could be improved (…) Little by little, I reduced it, and I am very satisfied”.
Bardo will be available on Netflix from December 16.
