The Hollywood summer of 1982 represents, for many cinephiles, a prosperous season and an exceptional vintage. Indeed in the space of a few weeks, spectators have been able to witness the release of many films from famous franchises, including Mad Max 2, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan or Rocky 3.
Horror and fantasy cinema was not to be outdone with the release of several films that have survived the decades to be still considered essential references today. Poltergeist by Tobe Hopper, The Thing by John Carpenter, and the cult Blade Runner by Ridley Scott.
But among all these summer blockbusters, another film eclipsed all the others and caused a phenomenal craze in the United States before sweeping the whole world. It is of course ET The Extra-Terrestrial by Steven Spielberg, a film released on June 11, 1982 in the US and which therefore celebrates its fortieth anniversary this month.
Sixth feature film by the director, AND The Extra-Terrestrial tells the story of an American family whose daily life will be turned upside down by the arrival of a creature from another world who will take up residence in their home. If Spielberg chooses again the fantastic genre for his new film, family relationships remain at the center of his story as it had already been the case for Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind.
