In the 19th century, the writer Jules Verne already made it his main setting in his novel From the Earth to the moon and its sequel Around the Moonbefore the emerging cinema also took an interest in our dear satellite.
One of its first cinematographic representations, which still remains an iconic image to this day, is that of this moon with a human face, a shell stuck in the eye, born from the imagination of George Méliès for his film Le Voyage dans The Moon released in 1902.
Since then, her appearances have multiplied in films of different eras, and in 2022, in Moonfall by Roland Emmerich, she even became an existential threat to our humanity, leaving her orbit and heading straight towards our dear Earth. With Moonfall, Roland Emmerich returns to his favorite genre, the disaster film with a science fiction background. We owe him several references in this area, such as Independence Day, The Day After and even 2012.
Create weightlessness
As the actors were not really filming in weightlessness, the production had to find a way to simulate this situation. She therefore used a system of small gimbals allowing the actors to move in all directions and even pivot.
A space advisor
Retired astronaut Bjarni Tryggvason helped the actors with lots of advice on how to make their actions feel authentic. The consultant specifies: “I guided them through certain operations of the space shuttle, through the lexicon that their characters are supposed to use and through their gestures in space.”
