Among these, we can cite the 1976 version by John Guillermin with Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange, and also the Peter Jackson film released in 2005 with Jack Black as the director, Naomi Watts as the actress, and the use of motion capture allowing Andy Serkis – who had already used this process to interpret the Gollum of Lord of the Rings – to slip into the skin of the giant humanoid.

Another film franchise that has featured monkeys since the 1960s is Planet of the Apes. Adapted from the novel by French writer Pierre Boule, the first film was released in 1968, with star Charlton Eston in the lead role, and had four sequels until 1973.

A new version by Tim Burton was released thirty years later in 2001, before Rupert Wyatt and then Matt Reeves took up the torch with a new prequel trilogy recounting the origins of the story.
